Ness Notes (Mar 14)

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

It’s rare that the NIT ’steals’ the headlines from the NCAA tournament but that may be the case tonight as Hall of Fame head coach John Chaney announced his retirement last night, while the NCAA’s big news is its play-in game. Chaney has coached for 34 years (24 at Temple) winning 741 games (516-252 at Temple). Only four active coaches own more career wins than Chaney and he’s taken Temple to the NCAA tourney 17 times.

My free play for Tuesday is on Fairleigh Dickinson over Manhattan at 7:00 ET. Join me tonight for another 15* play in the NBA (now 7-3 since Feb 3) and in college hoops, for my 20* NIT Opening Round GOY (4-2 last week with my 20* tourney Games of the year).

Unfortunately, he’ll also be remembered for the fact that he owns the most NCAA tournament wins by any coach to have not reached the Final Four (23). Chaney took Temple to five Regional Finals (the last of which was in 2001), losing all five times!

His 40 career NCAA games ranks him third behind only Guy Lewis (44) and Eddie Sutton (65) for most tournament games without a Final 4 trip. Temple’s appearance tonight in the NIT (the Owls host Akron), marks the school’s fifth consecutive NIT appearance, not good news for a school that was once an NCAA regular.

The NIT (now owned and run by the NCAA) begins tonight with a 16-team, eight-game opening round. Once the most prestigious tournament in college basketball, the NIT is now the one event no team wants to be back in, as defending champs. That distinction is held by South Carolina this year.

The Gamecocks won this title last year and came within a 49-47 loss to Florida in the SEC title game on Sunday, of not returning as the defending champs. South Carolina begins its “unwanted defense” tomorrow vs Western Ky.

In a change just this year, schools that won their regular season titles but lost in their respective conference tourneys, were guaranteed bids to this year’s NIT. Delaware State (MEAC), Fairleigh Dickinson (NEC), Ga Southern (Southern), Manhattan (MAAC), Northern Arizona (Big Sky) and Western Ky (SBC) were the six schools that benefited this year.

As mentioned earlier, Western Ky opens tomorrow against South Carolina but the other five regular season champs all play tonight. Fairleigh Dickinson is at Manhattan, Delaware St at Northern Arizona and Ga Southern is at NC-Charlotte. ESPNU carries Rutgers at Penn St (8:00 ET) and ESPN has Virginia at Stanford (9:30 ET)

The NIT has four No. 1 seeds this year and they are Cincinnati, Maryland, Michigan and Louisville. Hofstra (24-6) has the most wins of any NIT participant which also gives them the distinction of having the most wins of any team not in the NCAA tournament. The Pride will host Nebraska on Thursday.

Missouri St, with an RPI of 21, owns the distinction of owning the highest rating of any team in this year’s NIT which also means the Bears own the highest RPI of any school not in the NCAAs! The Bears don’t play their first game until Friday.

For the first time in five years, the NCAA’s play-in game does not include a school with a losing record. Interestingly, those sub-.500 teams went a perfect 4-0 SU and ATS the last four years in the play-in game. Tonight, it’s 18-14 Monmouth versus 16-15 Hampton (7:30 ET on ESPN).

Monmouth is a deep team (nine players average double digits in minutes) but just two players average double-digits in scoring. Hampton had lost six of seven games to end the regular season but then beat the MEAC’s No. 3 and No. 1 seeds to take the conference tourney. Monmouth is favored by four points with a total of 124 1/2.

In Monday’s NBA, the Pacers beat the Magic 97-83. Orlando has now lost 19 of its last 23 games. Keeping up with the Magic are the Knicks, who lost for the 24th time in their last 28 games last night (108-96 to the Nuggets). The Nets won 90-77 in Houston, as the Rockets fell to 1-15 without Tracy McGrady. Adding insult to injury, David Wesley, the only Rocket to have played in every game this season, missed his first game of the season last night after getting hurt against the Spurs on Sunday.

The T-wolves may not be in the class of the Magic and Knicks but they did lost their fifth straight game last night at the Clippers (95-87), giving them their 19th loss in their last 22 road games.

Tonight’s NBA features a nine-game schedule. The Mavs and Spurs (tied at 49-14) are both home tonight, with Dallas hosting Cleveland at 8:35 ET (Mavs are favored by 7 1/2 points with a total of 187) and San Antonio hosting the Hornets also at 8:35 ET (Spurs are favored by 10 1/2 points with a total of 179 1/2).

The Lakers eliminated the Kings in the playoffs in each of their three championship years (2000-02) but these days, these two former Western Conference powers are battling at the bottom of the playoff ‘picture′. The Lakers (7th) lead the Kings (8th) by a half-game and the Kings are just a half-game ahead of the 9th-seeded Hornets. However, Sacramento takes a 12-game home winning streak (9-0 SU and ATS with Artest) into its game with the Lakers tonight at Arco (10:05 ET). The Kings are favored by seven points with a total of 204.

In Seattle, the Sonics host the Suns at 10:05 ET. The last time these teams met was Jan 22 in Phoenix and in that game, the Sonics beat the Suns in double-overtime, 152-149. The 301 points scored marked the highest scoring NBA game since 1995. The two teams also combined for an NBA single-game record by making 32 three-pointers. The Suns have won eight of their last 10 games on the road, while the Sonics are playing much better since the break, going 5-5 SU and 7-3 ATS. Phoenix is favored by 5 1/2 points and the total is 226!

Soccer Brothers

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Do you remember the famous movie of the early 80s “the Blues Brothers″ with Dan Aykroyd and the late John Belushi. The two heroes were able to overcome all the obstacles in their way and to avoid their pursuers until the last scene of the film. “They’ll never get caught. They’re on a mission from God” was the tagline of the film. The current Brazilian national soccer team, which plays at the World Cup in Germany, reminded me of the Blues Brothers. Although they prefer samba music to blues, they seem to be unstoppable and although they are not on a mission from God their religiosity is obvious.

The Brazilian players often pray and some of them wear T-shirts with religious slogans under their uniforms. Lucio, one of the team’s best defenders was wearing a T-shirt with the message «Jesus loves you» in last World Cup’s final game in Yokohama. Kaka, a talented midfielder wears similar T-shirts, while Ze Roberto another midfielder according to the Columbian newspaper “El Pais” plans to become a pastor of the Evangelical Church. Another Brazilian, Luis Felipe Scolari, who is the coach of the national team of Portugal, has chosen for his team a training center in Marienfeld close to a 12th-century monastery, in order for him to visit it every morning and pray.

Brazilians are not the only religious players in the World Cup. Saudi Arabian players, who have reduced their prayers from five to three during the first phase of the World Cup, have special stickers on the furniture of their rooms showing the direction to Mecca in order to motivate their prayers. They also celebrated their first goal against Tunisia with a short prayer to their God. The Iranian national team asked for a special room dedicated to prayer in their hotel in Friedrichshafen and to the dismay of their coach they gave up hours of sleep before their first game against Yugoslavia to participate in a long, late-night Islamic ceremony held to mourn a seventh-century Shiite Muslim saint.

The organizing committee locked the chapels that are located in the Olympiastadion in Berlin and in the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen so as to avoid criticism for religious racism, but the question remains, “Does praying and strong belief affect the players’ performance?” Legendary veteran player Pele, who won the Cup three times, straightens out the issue with his statement. “I never prayed to win a game or to score. My first care was to remain healthy and after that I was praying to God that a match shouldn’t finish without a score (0-0)”. Lucio, on the other hand, supports that “the team that gives God the utmost glory deserves to be the champion in the World Cup 2006″. Time will tell which of this year’s World Cup teams will make it to be the World Champion of 2006, but one thing is for sure. Soccer funs will have the opportunity to admire the world’s best soccer players’ score, regardless of their religious beliefs.

The World Needs Love and Peace - A Poem for Humanity

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Strength and Honor and the Will to Fight, Terrorists claim it their historical right.

Standing on a doctrine 2,000 years old, They recruit innocence to die and be bold.

Terrorists are the enemy thus must pay, go to meet the maker as we show you the way.

Hypocrites of peace continually incite, They raise their voices and claim their might.

As the battle cry rages on, Human history adds verse to song.

Look in the mirror and see what you’ve done, Over a mythical past, religion and desert all gone.

Cruelty to women as the rest of the world pukes, now you threaten the global family with your nukes.

Live by the media and die by the sword, why do they die in the name of the lord.

Good bye and good reddens to the evil heads of sheet, look down at the dirt and your own feet.

Your manhood has wavered for it did not exist, We volunteers to fight evil continuing to enlist.

Strength and honor of Terrorists was not meant to be, their games and lies disallow them to be free.

The International Terrorists tried to re-create, the vision of humanity and extend their hate.

Their miscalculation of American will, caused them to look like a bottomless shrill.

Now they stand to meet their make, We send them to hell with thunder and quake.

Ignorant fools of hate hath we seen, now the middle east shall be wiped clean.

With the 1,000 suns and a lightening flash, we reduce the evil in Islam to Earth and Ash.

No more talk, not one more play, we must stop this Enemy without delay.

Thank you for peace on Earth and God Bless the USA.

Visual Arts

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

The history of mankind stands witness to the propensity of man to be observed by the aesthetics and beauties of life. Man’s tendency to create, recreate, and change is another demonstration that history shows us. Even in prehistoric times, this characteristic of men has existed, which is evident through drawings on stone walls, engravings, etc.

In prehistoric times men had no other way to express themselves other than drawing on walls or stones. It is earliest form of art, the way in which the early artist wanted to portray what he wanted to display. In literary terms art is nothing but communication, the artists’ recreation of his vision.

However, art is not limited to drawing, painting, sculpture, etc. There are living visual arts, such as a bonsai tree or an extravagant hybrid rose. Visual arts are a class of art forms, including painting, sculpture, photography, and others, that focus on the creation of works which are primarily visual in nature. Nowadays even dancing, figure skating, gymnastics, ballet etc. are considered to be a part of visual art. Simply put, when you are doing something artistic, or performing an art, you are basically taking something that has been done before and modifying it by changing or adding your own character to the piece.

Of late, a number of arts have evolved—pop art, ethnic art, etc. The subject of art is simply so so vast that simply there is no bond to creativity and what makes it so incredibly interesting.

Ukulele Tab - Learn To Play Amazing Grace

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Do you know that you can play melodies on your ukulele? Amazing Grace is a popular christian hymn. It doesn’t contain many notes and it is quite easy to play on ukulele with the help of ukulele tab notation. Let’s learn Amazing Grace!

Here is the lyrics to the first verse:

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see

We will start this ukulele lesson by introducing an ukulele tab notation suitable for article sites.

If you want to play with the help of the more common ukulele tab staff notation you are welcome to visit my site.

An ukulele can be tuned in many ways. I usually tune my ukulele this way:

G C E A

This tuning is very common and is called C-tuning. A is on the first string with the highest pitch.
Look at this ukulele tab example:

1/2

The first number indicates the fret to press down. The number after the slash tells you which string to play.

In other words, press down the first fret on the second string. Play the note with your right hand thumb, for example.

We will start by playing the first part of the melody with these lyrics:

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound

0/3 1/2 0/1 1/2 0/1 3/2 1/2 2/3 0/3

This ukulele tab notation doesn′t indicate the rhythm of the song. As you know the melody and maybe can sing it I guess you will feel how long the notes should be.

Let’s continue with the next part of the melody and the song lyrics:

That saved a wretch like me

0/3 1/2 0/1 1/2 0/1 3/2 0/1 3/1

What fingers should you use with your left hand? Well, it’s a little bit up to you, of course!

However, I recommend that you use your first finger for the notes on the first fret, the middle finger for the notes on the second fret and, you guessed right!, the ring finger for the notes on the third fret.

These fingerings will help you as you play in many ways. With one finger taking care of one fret each you will not have to look at your fingers as much as you will feel your way around on the fretboard better.

Another reason is that you can keep your hand in the same position as you only need to move your fingers and not your left hand. This will help you a lot when you start to play more difficult melodies.

Using your ring finger might feel awkward at first but with persistence you will get used to playing this way and you will benefit from it even when you play melodies on a guitar.

Let’s look at the next ukulele tab:

I once was lost, but now am found

0/1 3/1 0/1 1/2 0/1 3/2 1/2 2/3 0/3

We will now complete this ukulele tab melody:

Was blind, but now I see

0/3 1/2 0/1 1/1 0/1 3/2 1/1

I hope you will enjoy playing this melody on your ukulele! I recommend that you learn the melody by heart by practicing one little part of the melody at a time.

Numerology Fortune Telling Systems - As Diverse As Astrology

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Numerology, like astrology, has several different systems which have evolved over the years. These systems have the same basic principles, but also have major differences in how they prepare your reading. Here is a synopsis of the four major systems and how they differ.

Western Numerology

Western numerology is the classic form of numerology derived from the work of the Greek philosopher Pythagoras in the sixth century B.C. It uses your Gregorian birth date, and places the numbers in a (3 x 3) square with positions numbered from bottom to top, and left to right as shown below.

( 3 )( 6 )( 9 )
( 2 )( 5 )( 8 )
( 1 )( 4 )( 7 )

Completed lines and missing lines in your chart denote particular character strengths and weaknesses.

Chinese Numerology

Chinese Numerology also has ancient roots. It too places the numbers of your date of birth in a (3 x 3) grid, but instead of using Pythagoras grid above, they use the Lo Shu grid, based on the square of Wu of Hsia. This grid is numbered in a (3 x 3) magic square as shown below.

( 4 )( 9 )( 2 )
( 3 )( 5 )( 7 )
( 8 )( 1 )( 6 )

We call this grid pattern the square of Saturn. In addition, Chinese numerology converts your date of birth to the Chinese lunar calendar before charting the numbers.

The Lunar calendar begins the year on the second new moon after the Winter solstice (the shortest day of the year.) Note that the lunar year consist of twelve months in a regular year, and 13 months in a leap year. Also, Chinese Numerology does not recognize a life path number. This is a Western innovation.

Nine Star Ki

The Nine Star Ki system, more commonly called the Ki, also uses the Lo Shu grid shown above, but it then rotates the numbers each year, creating a set of nine different squares used in a nine year cycle. This system also uses the Chinese lunar year to calculate your birth date.

The system has (3) major numbers which produce your reading: Your Natal (lunar) year number, your Natal month, number, and your House number.

Yantra Magic Square Numerology

This numerology system is actually based on Indian Numerology Yantras. This system uses a constructed magic square where the top row (left to right) consist of your birth month, your birth day, your birth year (excluding century), and your Life Path number. The remaining rows are calculated by formula to complete a (4 x 4) magic square with these numbers, such that all rows, columns and diagonals have the same sum.

The calculated squares each represent a particular character trait and are interpreted for the reading. The Yantra Square shown below is for actor Johnny Depp, who was born on June 9th, 1963. Note that all rows and columns add up to the sum of (85).

( 6 )( 9 )( 63 )( 7 )
( 61 )( 9 )( 4 )( 11 )
( 8 )(64 )( 8 )( 5 )
( 10 )( 3 )( 10 )( 62 )

Inside A Box With The Thinking Woman’s Crumpet Or The Art Of Derren Brown

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

From the most ordinary of beginnings in the clutches of Croydon in Surrey, a young University student by the name of Derren Brown decided on a life changing career in hypnosis purely by chance. After an inspirational dip into such a ‘job,‘ he became fascinated with psychology, illusion and magic, yet staying firm that anything to do with ‘the other side of life,‘ as Colin Fry affectionately terms it, is a belief best left to the believers. As time went on, he delved into deeper questionable theories. Quickly learning magic, he embarked on mind reading and suggestive techniques to prove that the human mind was easily ’suggestible.’ Eagerly focusing on how a person can be predictable in thought, decision and activity, Derren Brown first came to our cynical screens in the form of his first television series, ‘Mind Control,’ aired in 2000, which explored these possibilities.

Energetic, entertaining and dusted with characteristics of Victoriana and Music Hall, this modern day Vaudeville wonder man comes complete with a smile warm enough to melt even the most sceptical of hearts. Using humour, charm and grace, he becomes an easy focus of attention. The eyes of the gazing audience are quickly taken in by his mesmerising being, so much so that we are totally under his spell.

It was no wonder to a perplexed television audience, that these first shows gathered astonished praise and equal scepticism. When the generation of the audience and magician are the same, one can’t help thinking of the mediocre Paul Daniels as a figure to compare any future talent with. Who else did we have in those days? Derren Brown is, without saying, a far cry from the sword throwing Hans Moretti and the fumblings of Mr Daniels, who used his assistant as a simple and visual distraction, so when we looked upon Derren Brown, we could only stand in disbelief. From cold sweats of a possibly fatal shot to the brain in ‘Russian Roulette’ (CД, Oct 2003) to appearing to cut off the oxygen to the brain to walk on broken glass in ‘Something Wicked Comes This Way’ (CД Dec 29, 2006) we have witnessed pain manoeuvring illusions that have made us gasp, cower, cry, laugh and even at times, jump to the safety of behind the sofa.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
‘Mind Control’ Comprised of six programmes to wet a tricksters appetite, he skims the surface of a human being with such depth that he merely entices us with his unique style of ‘magical’ entertainment that only became apparent to his audience over the coming years. When one looks back on this, ever so primitive series of DB skills, (rather like a visually, circus paraded C.V,) it only becomes clear to us how much he has ‘grown’ with us over the last , now, seven years.
The programmes were shown in 2000 as follows but not in the right order of broadcast…
Powers of Suggestion…
Pinpointing a theme where upon he presents himself to us in nothing far from the style of American nut, David Blaine, he immediately captures the ‘street theme’ of displaying his suggestive powers over the most diversely, mutant cynics - the reluctant shopper.
A Saturday afternoon, wandering around the Whitgift Centre in Croydon has never been a mind altering experience, especially if you live close by, yet the ‘off the cuff’ tones of Derren Brown gently coming across the public speakers shouldn’t have made any cause for alarm. Yet, whilst no one actually noticed, the man himself emerged from the top of the food hall with microphone in hand and a trusty cameraman at his side, he begins what appears to be a dull, non eventful monologue about a special offer situated by the lifts. On mentioning the lifts, he drops in a subtle comment about stopping suddenly and asking everyone interested in the offer to put their right arm up in the air on the word ‘now.’ Allowing the fading in of some creepy music, the shoppers stun themselves as well as each other in realising that they are all standing around with their right arms in the air.
The idea behind this suggestive persuasion is a fairly simple one; we are born into a world that his already suggestive in itself. Many mind theorists had already decided that we live in a social climate where we are ‘rounded up’ mentally and socially. The extremist of this would be George Orwell’s 1984 and the Big Brother theory that we are ‘conditioned’ to think and act in a certain way that is regarded as acceptable as we are taught these structures from our surroundings. Here, the microphone is the authority, just like telling a child not to go near the oven when it’s on as it is hot, a crowd of wandering shoppers are relaxed and hearing instructions subconsciously and act accordingly in their conscious world. It is known as the ‘thinking in a box’ theory.
Sounds easy, so what do we have as a result? A miserable afternoon around Croydon’s dullest shops turns into a spectacle of wonderment and intrigue. For once locals didn’t have to rely on hoodies invading Burger King for equal delight…
Seeing the Future…
In a programme aiming at the nervous sector of the sitting at home audience, DB focused on clairvoyance, but not how you and I would know it. Whilst having the ability to grab complete and utter strangers in the the middle of the street, presumably still in London, (which is not a great idea on the best of days,) he engages on a tour of how he can tell these innocuous shoppers tell about themselves that they could only know. How does he do this, well, if you can follow the last explanation, then it shouldn’t be do difficult; this approach to ‘mind reading’ is actually a trick used by more people around us than we care to think, called ‘cold reading.’ No, it is not the Gas man coming round, but the simple way of asking a question and getting the right response. If it can be seen it generalist terms, one can tell someone something about themselves and wait for a physical answer the way they respond in nervous laughter etc, acts as a strong guide as to how that person is feeling or what they do for a living….and in conclusion in this programme…?
Mr Brown is perhaps the only man alive who can stop the only happy, smiling Ethnic man in Carnaby Street who works in a police station.
Most wouldn’t have cringed at being called ‘shifty’….
The Art of Distraction…
A programme in which DB plays the Artful Dodger by ‘fleecing’ some unsuspecting chap haplessly sitting on a bench on a platform, waiting for a train. DB takes his watch, tie and wallet out of his inside pocket, all on account of handing it back to poor Anthony after the experiment had concluded.
So perhaps Channel Four might have received a few complaints when it was shown that Derren Brown managed to swindle the winning ticket out of a cashier at a dog track (probably Wimbledon) but this ‘skill’ had already been handed to us a century ago in the form of the Artful Dodger. Orphaned children in a Dickensian world were used by thieves to pick the pockets of wealthy gentlemen because they were small, nimble and unassuming. Although these attributes don’t work well for DB, the theory is still there, by cheaply, if you like, distracting the victim with one hand and allowing him to focus his mind on something other than your thieving hand, so much can actually be achieved as being fleeced is the last thing they expect is happening to them…
Now, now, come on, hand it back…
Memories are made of this…
DB is unwisely let loose on a casino den and wins (naturally) above everyone one else at the table. How? By placing little red stickers on certain everyday objects around the room, of course!
By focusing on a room full of clutter, it should be easy to play a game of blackjack. As DB allows us to say, ‘why didn’t I think of that,’ a few times, he shows us how you recognise objects around the room and relate them to a certain card. You do this 52 times, of course. Great, if you have 52 objects in the room that remind you instinctively of a particular card. Each time the card it used, you remove a red sticker…
Since your opponents are bound to notice you hoping about the room removing little red stickers off the Wedgwood, we get to wonder if Mr Brown is telling us how he really wins two and a half grand at the table in the space of ten minutes or is he pulling our legs?
If you could do it, would you really tell everyone else about it? So this is the thinking behind it all; He imagines the room and all the objects in it, (of course!). It is a feature in his series that shows his great skill in memory, procedure and focus on each card that it is dealt and striking it off an imaginary list. A craft that was used by the Greeks from around 82 BC…
Well, who the Hell can remember back that far..!?
Illusion or miracle…?
Again, DB stuns the English speaking world at a posh black tie party full of debutants and young conservatives with parents with too much money (or the Oxford University Ball, in other words). Perhaps on hindsight, the last person you would invite to such a shin dig would be Derren Brown especially if he has been clutching a black envelope in his hand all evening, and then suddenly asks for everyone’s attention. The agreeable young Stephen Fry wanna bie steps up to be blind folded, (perhaps only the second time in his life, the first being, to choose a title). DB offers the rest of the crowd to take a look at the picture from the envelope without breaking into hysterics. No noise must be given away to the blinded chap by his jolly good chums as they are then asked by DB to scream out in their minds only, the name of the picture on the card. A few sniggers are let out accidentally when they are presented with a picture of a tractor.
Although screaming in ones’ mind is perhaps only a past time that us parents perfect over the years, it is still just as difficult to figure out how before un blind folded, the chap in the chair got the picture right.
On reflection, the tractor boy thought it might have been some art of suggestion before he was originally sat with black cloth over his eyes. We spend the rest of the evening, mildly pondering over how it was done, but this is what we can gather…
A little more tricky to explain, but the general reasoning is what has been labelled since the Victorian times as ‘sixth sense.’ A cop out, it would seem, but there is a definite common ground found in the art of thought transference and what is also known as ‘cryptesthesia.’ This is the basic power of transferring thought onto paper in a sealed envelope. Again, it is the power of suggestion. Hudson in 1893 said that ’..when suggestion is actively and intelligently employed, it is always effective…’ To write an account of what is a logical explanation for thought transference and in this case, on a wide scale where a room full of people are engaging in the same thought, is fairly unrealistic. We are all capable of powers beyond belief. As DB himself says, he doesn’t claim to be anything or do anything that the rest of us can’t achieve ourselves after careful study and practice.
Pain Killer…
Okay, so this one does go beyond the realms of sheer human belief. Actually turning pain on and off like a tap it something that would have come in handy during child birth, so why turn it into an art form. Surely, the switching it on should be left in the capable hands of sado masochists. Apart from being a fairly good album by Judas Priest, ‘pain Killer’ takes is into the cliff hanger part of the series, a little something for the audience to chew on until the next show which wouldn’t be on for another year.
So, in this programme, DB gathers together four medical students which drops down to three when one of the girls, suddenly decides that she doesn’t want to participate as soon as the words ‘tooth ache’ are mentioned, a sensible girl. Then by subtle voice and suggestive words, the two of them start to rub their jaws complaining of toothache. The understanding here being that ‘pain is objective,’ once the thought or the idea or the sight of blood it that, that it the point that pain is then felt….
In an instant at a slap of the DB’s hand on the table, the pain is gone. A moment later, after asking permission, our two giddy med students are then shocked once more to find DB threading a needle through the other students hand who is unaware that he feels any pain. Dazed students sit in front of him wondering how the hell he did it. Meanwhile, the forth unparticipating girl is still running…perhaps not.
So the theory is? DB’s answer is again simple; ‘…pain is subjective…’ He believes that you feel pain if you can witness the point of where that pain is being felt. If a finger bleeds, you do not feel that pain until your eyes are directed to the sight of the blood pouring out. That sounds fair enough, so yet again, we are faced with that infamous power of suggestion. Not a feat that you could master in the advert break of Corrie, yet this theory, obviously from years of practice actually works. It has, at times, been proved to be of great use, especially for women experiencing fears of child birth pain. (If only I had known that six years ago, perhaps I wouldn’t have bothered with gas and air,) yet surely this now proposes the question of painkillers in the form of aspirins and the like. Do they work or is it the power of suggestion in out minds that makes us believe that taking it will make the pain go away? Studies of this question crossing over the barriers of science is a conversation best left after a bottle of Jack Daniels at three in the morning…
It is sad, yet it has to be noted that this man who makes you proud to come from near Croydon has also had his fair share of broad critics since the word go. Somehow, what one reads from the severest of sceptics, seems all too complimentary rather than insulting. Brown has, and also makes a point of stating at the beginning of his shows, that ‘..I am often dishonest in my techniques, but always honest about my dishonesty…’ thus showing that he his always willing to be open about any form of category that his audience cares to put him it. He allows us to be open with our own understandings of his illusions at the same time as he is shows us he is also open to questionable arguments. He does not ever label himself as a magician, a hypnotist or psychologist, yet if one was to describe him with these words, he would, I think, blush, and accept them as compliments.
He is whatever you wish for him to be, just the same as he allows us to be what ever he wants us to be in his company. He won’t harm, insult or put anyone in a situation where they would feel threatened or uncomfortable, but if you feel the curiosity take hold a little, he will warmly welcome you to experience the delights he offers. Magical, illusionist or just plain confidence trickster, he is a warm echo from the past of how entertainers of a different century conjured up the senses and the imagination enough to make eyes light up and mouths drop open.
Let us embrace a forgotten era where men inspired us to be amazed at the feats a human mind and body could withstand, from plunging into a tank of water, chained with little way of escape to tricking you out of your last penny, it’s an art that needs to be applauded, in what ever shape it shows itself in.
So, the next time Mr Blaine wants to shut himself in a box somewhere above London without food, water or any means of getting down, I suggest you watch a few re runs of David Copperfield magically making a tiger disappear on stage with his twinkling eyes and equally twinkling teeth.
Yet, if you want something that won’t shock you, or make you work out where all the mirrors are, but entertain you in it’s traditional sense and allow the possibility of perhaps, just for one second, believing, then please allow me put a suggestion of my own into your thoughts;
Numerology’s Presidential Curse - Don’t Get Elected in a Year Ending in Zero
Tuesday, December 29th, 2009
Eight of our 43 U.S. Presidents have died in office; and of those seven were elected in the twenty year cycle beginning in 1840, and ending in 1960. Is there truly a curse on U.S. Presidents who win elections in years ending in Zero?
Numerology is a science of cycles, so when we find a cycle like this among people’s lives, we try to give it a closer look. Here then is a detailed list of this curious cycle.
1840
William Henry Harrison is elected our 9th president. He gives an inaugural speech of one hour and 45 minutes, and catches a cold. It turns into pneumonia and he dies on April 4th, 1841. He is the first president to die in office, and has the shortest presidency on record; just 30 days.
1860
Abraham Lincoln is elected our 16th president. He completes his first term and is re-elected in 1864. He is assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theater on April 15th, 1865; just 5 days after Robert E. Lee’s surrender ended the Civil war.
1880
James A. Garfield is elected our 20th president. He is shot by his assassin Charles J. Guiteau, at the Washington train station on July 2nd, 1881 less than four months into his presidency. Garfield lived for another eleven weeks, but repeated probing for the bullet caused infection to set in, and he died of blood poisoning on September 19th, 1881.
1900
William McKinley was elected our 25th president in 1896. He runs and wins re-election in 1900. He is shot by his assassin, Leon F. Czlogosz at a public reception in Buffalo, New York on September 6th, 1901. He lived another eight days and died on September 14th, 1901.
1920
Warren G. Harding is elected our 29th president. While returning from a trip to Alaska in June 1923, Harding arrives in San Francisco suffering from food poisoning. He develops pneumonia and dies suddenly on August 2nd, 1923.
1940
Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected our 32nd president in 1932. He wins re-election in 1936, 1940, and 1944. He dies in office on June 12th, 1945 of a cerebral hemorrhage.
1960
John F. Kennedy is elected our 35th President. He is shot and killed, presumably by Lee Harvey Oswald in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas on November 22nd, 1963.
1980
Ronald Regan is elected our 40th president. Two months into his presidency, he is shot by John Hinckley Jr. in Washington D.C. on March 30th, 1981. Regan is critically wounded, but the bullet misses his heart, and emergency surgery saves him. Regan survives, and runs for and wins another term in 1984. Regan breaks the chain of seven presidents elected in the twenty year cycle to die in office.
2000
George W. Bush is elected our 43rd president. He won re-election in 2004, so the clock is still ticking on him. He has another 21 months in office.
Twins Have Become Every Bettor’s Fantasy
Tuesday, December 29th, 2009
Less than two months ago the underachieving Minnesota Twins looked as if they were headed nowhere, buried deep beneath the world champion White Sox and upstart Tigers, but a 33-8 run has catapulted them into the American League playoff picture and in the process has made them one of the most profitable plays in all of baseball.
The reason for the Twins sudden success? Pitching. Plain and simple. Pitching not only wins championships but it turns a profit. Over the last 28 games started by young studs Francisco Liriano, Johan Santana and veteran Brad Radke, the Twins are 25-3, with a record of 9-1 behind Liriano and 8-1 with Santana or Radke on the hill. Overall the Twins starting pitching ranks fifth best in all of baseball and the bullpen, with an ERA of 3.24, is tops.
The surge has put the Twins at 58-41, and while they still remain 8.5 games behind the first-place Tigers, they are just a single game behind the reeling White Sox for the wild card. The turnaround has made the Twins the second most profitable moneyline team in baseball at $1,703, behind the aforementioned Tigers who remain tops and are currently at $2,947.
Even though they are No. 2 overall, the Twins remarkably have been a money loser on the road. With a 21-30 mark, the Twins have posted a road deficit of $864. Even here things are improving, as the Twins have won three of four on the road entering Wednesday’s series finale against the Pale Hose. The Twins have been virtually automatic at home where they are 21-2 during their surge and 37-11 on the year - good for an overall profit of $2,567.
Minnesota has a runline record of 53-46, showing a profit of $714, which is also among the best in MLB. On the run total front the Twins are about even with a mark of 49-46.
For the season Minnesota has been a particularly good play with either Santana or Liriano on the Hill, as both are among the 10 most profitable starters in baseball. The Twins are 16-5 in games started by Santana, good for a profit of $1068. If history is an indication this trend should continue as Santana’s post All-Star break record is an unbelievable 33-3 since 2003. When Liriano toes the rubber, the Twins are 11-2 for a profit of better than $800. Astute parlay players are doing even better as 11 of the 16 wins started by Santana have gone over the run total and eight of the 11 wins started by Liriano have been unders.
Radke has been a huge part of the Twins resurgence. On June 1, the 33-year-old righty was 4-6 with a 7.01 ERA and the Twins were 4-8 in his starts. Radke has improved his record to 9-7 and has lowered his ERA to 4.74 for the season, improving the Twins record to 12-9 in his starts, good for a profit of $370.
If the Twins are able to complete their turnaround (they were languishing at 25-33 before their tear) and actually make the playoffs, they could prove a very dangerous team as a better 1-2-3 at the top of the rotation cannot be found in baseball and they can still be had at generous odds.
Nine Sportsbook has the Twins at 17/1 to win the American League Pennant and 33/1 to win the World Series. Pinnacle Sportsbook, which is not currently offering odds on the pennant winners, has Minnesota at 19/1 to win the series.
This won’t last much longer as evidenced by Bodog offering just 7/1 on the Twins to win the American League and 9/1 to win the series, especially in the event the Twins make a deadline move to upgrade their offense like has been rumored.
