Is There A Casino in Heaven?

Monday, October 31st, 2005

The first time I entered a casino I fell in love. I fell in love with the glamour, the noise and the lights. But mostly I fell in love with the action. There is nothing like a busy casino at 2 o’clock in the morning. You’ve got your high rollers, your hustlers and your little old ladies playing the slots.

I can look back on my gambling career through the men I married. The first man I married, I’ll call him Big Daddy, was 55 years old. I was 19. I was just a kid but I had all the attributes gamblers loved. I had big boobs, a big personality and a killer smile. Wrap that up in a tight skirt and spiked heels and I could have ruled the world.

Big Daddy loved Black Jack. He loved Black Jack more than he loved me. That was his game. And he could sit for hours playing hand after hand. He once sat for eight hours straight without leaving the table. Not even to go to the bathroom. Now that is dedication. He was like most amateur gamblers. He lost consistently. Every once in a while he would have a good night and we would celebrate big time. But those were rare. Like I said he was an amateur and not a professional.

The second man I married, I’ll call him Johnny, loved the crap tables. Dice was his game and he lived and breathed it. He even slept with a pair of lucky dice under his pillow. Johnny would have tremendous lucky streaks where he couldn’t lose. It was incredible. At times it was like he could will a 2 or a 3 or a 12 be rolled. But he could never walk away. No matter how big his bank roll was he had to play until he lost it all. But that was Johnny.

The third man I married was a professional gambler. He made his living by it. And he had rules and systems he always followed. And he always won. Poker was his game and the one rule he always lived by was to walk away from the table before your luck did. It didn’t matter how hot he was or how much money he was up, he knew when it was time to walk away. And he always did. And like I said, he always won.

The first time I ever walked into a casino I fell in love. And even today, when I walk into a casino, I fall in love all over again.

House of the Goblin
[Part Two of Three]

Here is where, where the air is still

And the mountains shadows disappear!
Here is where, unnumbered spirits dwell

Where harp and memory expire…

Where the rainbow—leaps, from its

Storeroom-keep, and cries;
And the sands along the oceans coast

Echo then die…as in sleep…;

And where enchantment turns into ghouls!…

Who be these spirits, which charm and gleam?

A fabric from the “Inferno,” I think
Or a symbolic language in a forgotten dream

Yes! We are all exiled from beauty…

Yes, we are exiled from beauty unseen…

Where fragile-wings and tenderness
Meet meet with the seraphim.

Yet we must lock the keep…

So no man may walk among our sleep

Yes, yes, oh yes, we all live—
We all live, do we not, you and I,

In the House of the Goblin!…

Muffled in a black lily; smiling, smiling

To find a way out—out, out;
Sorceress posing as Almighty God…

‘Thou art, as a violent worm!’

(I am more noun than verb, yet the
verbs are winning, with the worms.)

Notes: Part II, #753 7/8/05 “In doing this poem, images seem to flash through my mind, as if I found myself in a lockup on planet earth.”

Poetry In General by dlsiluk, “To achieve ones meaning in poetry, you may have to drop the musical ascent or so I’ve often found myself doing; not sure if there is a right or wrong way in this. But what I do know is that, if I do not drop it, I can not become engulfed with the wholeness of the poem I want to produce. Yes, we have to fight against spirit and experience and in order to win you must chew on whatever words fit.”

How To Learn a Foreign Language

Monday, October 31st, 2005

ADVANTAGES OF KNOWING ANOTHER LANGUAGE

You can enjoy greater personal power in a foreign country when you speak the language. Without leaving your own home town, you can enter into the literature and culture of another country when you can read a foreign language. You will feel greatly empowered asking for directions, inquiring about places to visit, and making new friends and acquaintances in the language of your host country. You will also expand your business and employment opportunities.

ANYONE CAN LEARN

Like many complex skills, learning a foreign language is much more a matter of daily effort than ability. In fact, scientists that study the human brain have discovered that parts of it are specialized for learning and using language. Except for a few people in special circumstances, virtually every adult human speaks at least one language.

BASIC PRINCIPLE

The most important principle to learning a new language is regular use. It is much easier to learn a spoken, living language than a “dead” language. You can study a foreign language in many ways and the more the better, but the best way is by immersion. Practice with native speakers as often as possible. If you can’t find native speakers, then find others who are trying to learn like you. Your local university or college may have a language house, such as a Spanish House, a French House, or a Russian House. If you attend the school, you can ask about living there. If you don’t, you may still be allowed to visit and practice the language with the residents. The internet also provides access to groups for people who want to practice a foreign language. Check newsgroups, Yahoo Groups, or MSN groups. You can practice listening to the language by watching a film or DVD in that language. Foreign films are also a great way to learn more about the culture that speaks your chosen language.

STUDY MATERIAL

In addition to practice, you need to have a source of study material. The source can be a textbook or one of many language-learning books sold in bookstores and online. If you take a course at a school, the textbook will be designated by the instructor. You may also choose to hire a native speaker who will teach you one on one. It is also possible to find language courses taught online, although these may not be able to replace hearing a native or proficient speaker live in person. Your local library has many language learning books that you can use for free. The great importance of study material is a progressive guide that leads you from most basic concepts to more advanced skills in a language.

TALK WHAT YOU WANT

A French instructor once said about participation in her class: “It’s okay to lie, as long as you’re grammatically correct.” This is probably not a good idea in most situations, but it works great as practice in the right setting. Whenever possible, learn about words and sayings that have to do with your own interests. If you like sports, learn the words for ‘team,’ ‘ball,’ ‘player,’ ‘score’ and so forth. If you like cooking, learn the words for cooking. This is also a good idea for any field of business you would like to undertake in the chosen language. Practice conversing in the language about the subject that interests you.

READ WHAT YOU LIKE

In addition to spoken language, you can practice reading the language. Beginning books can be found that will allow you to cut your teeth on the new language. As you become more advanced, you should try more difficult reading materials. Many bookstores and larger libraries offer newspapers and magazines in foreign languages. If your chosen language is written with a non-Roman alphabet, like Greek, Russian, Arabic, or Chinese (characters), you will need to devote a good deal of effort to learn the writing system which will include a good deal of writing it. It is possible, however, to learn to speak a language without learning the writing system. For example, many people learn to speak Chinese and write it in pinyin which simply adopts the same alphabet as the English language (Roman Alphabet) to spell Chinese words.

FEEDBACK

Feedback enables you measure your progress and correct any errors in pronunciation or grammar that you make. Formal instruction in a class or a private tutor will provide you with feedback. You can also examine your own progress by quizzing yourself with tests in books. If you wish to improve your pronunciation, you can even record your own voice and play it back to yourself. Listening to a recording of your voice allows you to focus on what you hear more than when you hear yourself as you speak.

VERBAL and WRITTEN

Verbal

Speaking, understanding, and otherwise conversing in the language are all skills that pertain to the verbal area. Most people find the passive ability to understand a language easier than speaking it, although this is not always so. Typically, your passive vocabulary is much broader than your active vocabulary in any given language. In other words, you understand far more words than you actually use to express yourself.

Written

Reading and writing the language are both skills involving the writing system. Reading is the passive aspect, while writing is the active aspect. Again, reading is easier than writing the language. A good way to practice spelling and your ability to hear the language along with writing is to do a ‘dictation.’ For this activity, you write down what you hear in the appropriate language. High School and college courses often use this technique.

BASIC PARTS OF A LANGUAGE

This is very simplified and applies to all languages. Of course, some languages do not have a writing system.

Pronunciation (Phonology)

Words (Vocabulary)

Word Forms (Morphology)

Grammar (Syntax)

Spelling (Writing System)

Pronunciation is the way you use your mouth to speak the language. Hearing is an important component with pronunciation. A foreign language will have some sounds that are familiar to you and quite few that are unfamiliar. German has rounded vowels made in the front of the mouth that don’t sound anything like English. Arabic has different forms of ‘s,’ ‘d,’ and ‘th’ that require learning a new pronunciation skill. Chinese has tones. Remember, the distance between two languages is the same in both directions. The English ‘th’ sound is a breeze for most Arabic speakers but challenging for speakers of German. Become familiar with all the sounds of the given language and realize that some will take ongoing practice to say correctly.

Words are the building blocks of a sentence. Most people find learning lists of words boring. There are words basic to any language that you need to learn. For example, it is impossible to speak standard English without words such as ‘I,’ ‘and,’ ‘to,’ ‘the,’ and ‘a.’

Word Forms are the ways in which words are made in the language. This is how pieces of words are put together.

Grammar is rules for putting words together to express the language. Many people find grammar a challenge. Like arithmetic, grammar builds upon basic skills. Speaking a language is a particularly good way to help learn proper grammar.

Spelling or more properly, the writing system, is the way the language is written or printed. Some languages do not have a writing system at all. These languages are generally not spoken by a large group of people.

Learning How to Speak the Spanish Language

Monday, October 31st, 2005

Are you interested in learning the Spanish language? Many people are intimidated by everything that it takes to learn a new language, when in fact there really is no reason to be. If you are reading this article, you learned how to read and speak English somewhere along the way and English is said to be the single most difficult language that there is to learn. There are so many different words for one meaning, that a person could get lost for a long time going through all of the various words with all of the various meanings.

There are several ways to go about learning the Spanish language. The first one is to obviously take Spanish classes. If you are in high school or college you probably have plenty of Spanish classes to choose from at all levels, but if you don′t attend school or you are not a regular student anywhere, you have to go through some other ways of going about learning the Spanish language.

In this case, you have to decide how you learn best in order to start learning Spanish language. Some people are visual learners and other people have to do things in order to learn them properly. Also, your level of Spanish language has to do with the way that you learn Spanish language as well. There are many options that depend on these factors, but you can choose from Spanish language audio CDs or cassette tapes and Spanish language learning software. It doesn’t stop there but what matters is what method works best for you.

If you are one of those people who learn relatively well, you can start off with vocabulary and word exercises done on the Spanish language learning software for the computer. Books are also great tools for learning the Spanish language as they can give you the best context for each and every word that you pick up along your learning endeavors.

Learning the Spanish language is a rather difficult endeavor to undertake but it is well worth it in the end. There are so many benefits to reap in the social world as well as the professional world for being a person who speaks more than one language on a fluent level. People who′re known to be bilingual or speak multiple languages, even on a conversational level are known to make more money and move through quickly throughout the career chain as they are able to communicate with a much broader base of clientele.

Don′t hesitate to go about learning the Spanish language. It will surely be one of those things you will look back on and be happy that you got into in the first place. Speaking another language is a useful thing to be able to do throughout life, and learning Spanish language is quite the rewarding endeavor indeed.

Why Not Learn To Play Guitar Online? 5 Tips To Get The Most From Your Playing

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

Why not learn to play guitar online? If you are interesting in learning how to play guitar, there has never been a better time to start. The internet gives us access to huge amounts of guitar information, whether it be from watching your heroes on youtube or downloading individual blues guitar lick lessons etc. Here are my tips for learning to play guitar online.

Learn to play guitar online, Tip 1:
Find some good guitar sites, and save them to your favourites on your internet browser. It’s easy enough to find decent sites if you spend a little time with a good search engine. A good guitar website can be like a real community with a wide ranging number of diverse members. As such you can learn a hell of a lot just from looking in forums etc, the only problem is that there are so many to choose from, and that’s why I recommend saving the best ones to your favourites.

Learn To Play Guitar Online, Tip 2:
Be organised. Decide what you want to learn and when you want to learn it by. Being focused in that way will give you much faster progress than most guitar players experience. You can aid yourself in this by creating folders on your computer and naming them after each particular thing you are learning. You can then save the relevant things to each folder, so that if you then want to refer back to chords or scales or whatever, you will find them with a minimum of fuss.

Learn To Play Guitar Online, Tip 3:
Try and take advantage of the media. Many people just use the internet to find out chords to songs and tab to licks they want to learn etc-this is cool but you can do so much more! Why not find a computerized metronome to help you learn to keep time, or how about some specialized ear training software? Having a good ear makes any musician ten times as effective and you can find software to help you with this and much more.

Learn To Play Guitar Online, Tip 4:
Look for a guaranteed product-If you decide to purchase one of the many guitar tuition packages around, be sure to go with one that has a money-back guarantee. Unfortunately not every site on the web is 100% trustworthy, so it’s always good to make sure you will be covered for any problems.

Learn to Play Guitar Online, Tip 5:
This is not so much a tip to learn to play guitar online, it’s more like learn to play guitar with your computer-Why not record yourself? Get some simple software and record your playing onto your computer. When you listen back to it you will be able to spot any weak areas or problems in your playing very clearly. It’s also excellent because you can listen back to your old recordings and notice how much better you have become!

There are many ways to learn to play guitar online, but I’m willing to bet that if you focus and use the internet to it’s fullest, you will become a good guitarist much faster than without using the internet!

My New Found Respect for Marvin Lewis

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

On Sunday I watched the Bengal’s 28-20 win over the Steelers. I came away with several impressions including a new found respect for Cincinnati head coach Marvin Lewis.

The Steelers completely dominated the first quarter and it looked like it was going to be an extremely long day for fans in the Queen City. Pittsburg led 7-0 owning a 128-26 total yardage edge and a 9-2 first down edge. The Steelers were first and goal from the Bengal six as they changed sides.

On the first play of the second quarter, Roethlisberger made a horribly ill-advised throw over the middle that was picked off by Madieu Williams. Equally ill-advised was Williams not taking the touchback and running the ball out from six yards deep and getting dropped at the three.

In my eyes, the game changed as much on the next play as it did from the result of the interception. Carson Palmer calmly drops back into his own end zone and hits Houshmanzadeh at the Pitt 24 for an 18 yard gain. The Steelers balloon was popped and the Bengals methodically drove the field 97 yards in 14 plays for the 7-7 tie.

Pittsburg responds with a 6-minute drive of their own that stalls on the Bengal 30. Despite Heinz Field being known as a graveyard for kickers outside of 40 yards, Cowher opts for 48-yarder on 4th-and-15 which is quite predictably blocked.

With 1:03 to play in the half, Lewis opens up with 9-yard shovel pass that should have gone for much more. With 10 seconds left in the half, Palmer finds Chris Henry with on a three yard fade route for a 14-7 halftime lead.

The third quarter was almost an instant replay of the first with the Steelers holding the ball for 10:39 and regaining a 17-14 lead. Unfortunately for the Steelers, the fourth quarter was an instant replay of the second.

It looked like Pitt would grind out a 3-6 point win when the Steelers muffed a punt which was recovered by the Bengals at the Pittsburg nine with 8:07 left to play. Bang! Palmer to Houshmanzadeh and it’s 21-17 Cincinnati. Vernon Haynes fumbles on the second play of the subsequent drive, Bang! Palmer to Houshmanzadeh for 30 yards and 28-17 lead. Two plays off turnovers, 39 yards, 10 elapsed seconds and two touchdowns. Point, set, match.

I graduated High School in 1978 and like many of you played football. I can remember two givens. Wanna run your ass off? Try picking up a fumble and running rather than just falling on the ball to make a recovery. Coach Meredith would pick out the offender, dress him down at the beginning of practice, and tell him to get going. Three hours later, he could still be seen circling the goal posts in the glow of street lamps and headlights.

The second was, no matter where we were on the field, after a turnover, we were going for the end zone or trying a gadget play attempting to tear the heart out of an opponent. Everyone knew it was coming, more often than not, it still worked. There’s nothing more demoralizing than a bad turnover. Well there is. Giving up points on the play following a bad turnover.

There was no doubt in my mind at the beginning of the year that the Cincinnati Bengals were a good football team, just not an elite team that could contend for a Super Bowl title. Some of my doubts revolved around HC Marvin Lewis. Seeing this aggressive fearless side of Lewis along with the job he did over the summer when half his team was on the police blotter has dispelled many of my doubts about him. The Bengals may not win the Super Bowl or even come out of the AFC but they are definitely for real and Super Bowl contenders.

Secrets Of Foreshortening - Learn How To Foreshorten Like A Pro

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

To teach how to foreshorten is difficult.

Even the definitions of the word itself are somewhat vague.
“Foreshorten—to represent figures as they appear to the eye when seen obliquely″;
“to represent objects in accordance with the laws of perspective”;
“the art of diminishing the entire length of an object when viewed obliquely.”

Foreshortening is to draw what we don′t see.

Foreshortening is one branch of the study of the elementary laws of perspective.

Much of what we see in nature is foreshortened. With the exception of the lines at right angles with the line of vision, all dimensions appear foreshortened.

Unless you were looking through a hole in the ceiling, the table and practically every article in a room would appear foreshortened.

Even the pictures on the wall, if above the level of the eye, are seen foreshortened. This will not be the case if they are tilted in such a way that their surfaces are at right angles to the line of vision.

If you can draw a cylinder lying on its side, in perspective, then you can draw anything in perspective.
The same rules apply.

Once you have draw a plain cylinder on its side, could you draw a lemon also? Sure you could. What about a carrot? The same principle again.

But what about more complicated things? How do you draw the wheels of a car in perspective?
By the same rules you used to draw the two planes of the cylinder lying on its side.

After mastering basics like these, how might you foreshorten something complicated, like a leaf?

The best way to foreshorten a leaf is to get one, place it in the desired position and draw it from life. This experience, after practicing, will enable you to draw a leaf, in perspective, from memory later on.

The best way to learn how to foreshorten parts of the human figure is by copying.

For example, the head bowed forward or back can be considered as a cirlce drawn in perspective. Even the human arms resembles a geometric shape. The same rules apply.

The human hand can be considered a collection of circles, ovals and cylinders. They are foreshortened in the same way as the single geometrical object by itself.

Take your left hand as a model and draw foreshortened views of it for practice.

Make free-hand drawings of cylinders in various positions, especially one that will show the visible end of a cylinder appearing nearly as a straight line.

Draw a box from a model. Place it directly in front of the eye, but above or below it. Measure the back edge of the top and compare it with the front edge in your drawing. Note that the back edge will be much shorter. Note that the two side lines will converge to meet the shorter lines. Place the box to one side, so that one side will be seen. Note the apparent shortness of the further (vertical) edge of the side.

These same rules will apply to anything drawn in perspective. Practice basic geometric shapes in this way and you’ll soon be able to foreshorten anything.

Photography - Photographing Children

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

Ever see the movie where the photographer is trying to take a family photo and the kid is doing everything he can, short of starting World War III, to keep that photo from being taken? Every tantrum in the world ever taken is captured in that one scene. Very funny, yes. But the truth is, photographing children is not an easy task for several reasons.

For starters, kids have a very short attention span. To get them to sit still for even a minute is like asking for a miracle. Fidgeting is like a way of life for kids. Bill Cosby used to have a blast doing comic bits about the brother and sister who couldn’t stop touching each other and were always getting into some kind of trouble. Sit still? Not a chance.

Aside from that, children don′t take direction very well even if they aren′t restless. To say to a child, “turn your head slightly to the left” is like asking him to do advanced calculus. It isn′t going to happen. Either the kid is going to move his head so little that it won′t have made a difference or he’ll turn his head half way around. “A little to the left” is a foreign concept to children.

So what is a photographer to do, especially if his assignment is to take photos of a church directory, or maybe of kids in school? Well, there are a few tricks he can use that will actually produce very good results. However, these tricks aren’t going to work without one very key ingredient and this is the hardest thing to be able to do because you either have it or you don’t.

The number one key to being able to photograph a child is to be able to relate to the child one on one. You have to have the kind of personality that either mesmerizes the child or at least makes him feel enough at ease with you that he or she can follow simple instructions. Unfortunately, some photographers have the personality of a fig leaf and there is just nothing you can do about it. These people probably shouldn’t be photographing kids at all. But if you do have a bubbling personality, use it. Make the kid laugh and feel at home.

If, however, you’re not exactly personality plus, there are some things you can do to get the kid’s attention. One of the oldest and most effective tricks in the book is to bring along objects with you that the child can either play with or look at.

For example, if you want to get the child to tilt his head and look in a certain direction, the easiest way to do this is to hold up an object. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but the more colorful the better. All you need to do is hold the object up in the direction you want the child to look. So let’s say you want him to move his head slightly to his right. What you do is hold the object in your left hand and move it to your left to the point where you want the child to look. Then simply tell him to look at the object, using the object’s name. So if you’re holding up a small brown bear, tell the child to look at the brown bear. Also, smile when you do this. Eventually the child’s head will be in the exact position where you want it so you can take the photo.

Another thing you can do, in the case of a child who won′t sit still, is to give him something to play with. While he’s looking at the object, simply call his name or do something to get his attention and as soon as he looks up you can take the photo. Yes, you have to be fast. But with a lot of practice you′ll get real good at this.

Jim Carrey: His Movies Have a Glory All Their Own in the Stars

Saturday, October 29th, 2005

Jim Carrey was born on the 17th of January in 1962 in Ontario, Canada it makes him a Capricorn by Sun Sign. Which astrologically means that no matter how much joking he does or what you see on the screen or in an interview his underlying motivations come with very serious intentions—to succeed at and be the best at everything he undertakes.

Also at Carrey’s birth, Jupiter, the planet that helps us insist that we go overboard, was holding nearly the same position as Mercury, the planet of jibber jabbering. Together these two planets gives Carrey his talent for making elaborate fun with a dialog of words. Now because these two planets are in the mental air sign of Aquarius, those dialog of words are brilliantly delivered. But this same aspect also inherits him with his box office popularity because Mercury is the planet that rules one’s name–and Jupiter, well anything it touches, it expands two fold, and three fold, and four fold, and so on.

However, if Jim Carrey wasn’t endowed astrologically at birth with the Moon in Gemini, the sign of the twins, he wouldn’t have the mutable personality necessary to take on such straining character roles such as The Mask and Dr. Suess’ Grinch; and then surprising us with his more serious acting roles in The Majestic–for which he was fantastic, and now the The Number 23, which I can wait to see.

Now speaking of THE GRINCH it is no wonder that Jim Carrey, who has done exceptionally well at the box office, was chosen to star as the Dr. Suess’ character that stole Christmas cause even the character’s name itself holds something mysteriously correct about Jim Carrey. THE GRINCH anagrams into RICH GHENT.

If I go a bit further and take a cockeyed peek at the letters inside of JIM CARREY’s name. You can see that there are the letters that can be lexed into making the words that say, A MERRY ICY CRIME RIME. Now wait a minute. ..

Dr. Theodore Suess Giesel was born on March 2nd, otherwise written as 3/02, in 1904. The planet Saturn measured 1 degree and 38 minutes of Aquarius when Carrey was born, which when rounded off becomes 02 degrees of Aquarius–which when measure in total degrees of celetestial longtitude become 302 degrees. Wow! the same numeric digits appearing in Dr. Suess’ birthday are exactly appearing in Carrey’s Saturn placement at birth. And if you know your science, you know it takes Saturn over 32 years to make one orbit of the Sun, so there is no way this could be a coincidence. Because if Carrey or Dr. Suess were born etiher one day before or one day after the dates as they were…these numbers would all be different. So you see, there was no one but Jim Carrey divinely destined by both the stars and his name to one day be Dr. Suess’ Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

But now I’m taking a look at his next role in the film The Number 23 and well I’m just floored. You see, when Jim was born in 1962 on the 17th of January the planet Neptune, which rules the film industry–because of it affinity with illusion, was 13 degree of Scorpio, which when measured in its full degrees of celestial longitude along the ecliptic is 223 degrees. Isn’t this movie about his obession with the number 23 always repeating, or adding, or doubling up 2 itself.

What is even more funny is that right now the planet of strange happenings, Uranus, is forming a 120 angle to Carrey’s natal Neptune (film). So making this movie of strange happenings re-occuring with the number 23 seems to be both auspiciously and celestially timed.
